CHAPTER 13
Six days. Vaza had been there with the human who had summoned him for six days and somehow it felt like longer and at the same time far too short as he was made aware of how little time he had left before the Yule magic was spent and he would be sent back to where he came from to make his way through the world along other available paths. He did not truly know how much distance separated where he had been summoned from and the place he occupied nowâor even how he might return for that matter. Soon he would be torn away from his little flame, and there would be nothing he could do about it once the magic that had crafted his purpose was fulfilled and spent.
Perhaps that was why he had been surprised by how much he meant the words he had fervently offered his little flame beneath the light of the full moon after the first of many pleasure joinings that they had enjoyed over the last day. Ember Feuerâthe flameâs undying embersâhad not only quickly gained an unexpected influence over him but had truthfully stolen his heart entirely. She was now his greatest joy and his greatest weakness: a vulnerable human. He had not even been able to stop himself from giving her his flame when he released within her, joining their energies together in a crescendo of magic that spun their lives together.
A creative magic that could do much more if the gods were willingâbut such a gift was one that he was not ready to think of yet. There was plenty of time to hope for such things, and at better times when he did not risk being separated from the one female he wished to claim forever as his mate.
He glanced surreptitiously over at her from beneath his lashes, enjoying the exquisite detail of her face in profile as he found himself playing the part of the besotted male walking his lover to work. Although he had shrugged off the curious look that she had given him when he had insisted on walking in this form with her as she returned to work after enjoying a full day together, the reality that he did not share with her was that he had grown far more covetous of her attentions. That and he wanted all the local males aware of his attentions.
Even if they had seen them together before, he wished to reinforce it and imprint it on all of their memories so that no one might try to overstep at any timeâeven if they should be separated for a while until he was able to make his way back to her. An apprentice she may be, she represented to him the slowly dying spirit of hope within this little town. He vowed that he would let nothing snuff out her beautiful spark and vitality, and not only because he was certain that the town would fall shortly afterward.
